Down arrow symbols
Click any down arrow symbol below to copy it, then paste it into a message, document, username or social bio. The standard down arrow is ↓ — the symbol most people mean when they search for a down arrow, an arrow pointing down, or a down arrow copy paste button. Every symbol on this page is a real Unicode character, so a copied arrow down symbol pastes as text and keeps working in Word, Google Docs, Instagram, WhatsApp and email.
People also search for this set as a downside arrow symbol, a downward arrow, a down symbol or a down arrow glyph. People also phrase it as a symbol downward arrow search. Those are all the same family, collected here in one place: classic down arrows first, then bold and triangle styles, down-left and down-right diagonals, curved arrows, and the up-down pairs that are often confused with them.
Fastest choice: use ↓ inside normal text, ⬇ when the arrow should look like an emoji, and ▼ for a dropdown or “expand” indicator.
Copy and paste down arrow symbols
Each button copies one symbol. The small code under a symbol is its Unicode code point — the same codes listed in the full table further down, if you ever need to type a symbol arrow pointing down by hand instead of copying it.
Classic down arrows
The everyday set. If you only need one down arrow, it is in this group — start with ↓ for plain text, ⬇ for a bold emoji-style arrow, and ⇓ when you want extra emphasis.
Bold, triangle and chevron styles
Heavier shapes that stay readable at small sizes. ▼ and ⌄ are the styles most people recognise from dropdown menus and expandable lists.
Down-left and down-right arrows
Diagonal arrows point down and to one side at the same time. Use ↙ when something moves down and to the left, and ↘ for down and to the right — they are not interchangeable with a straight down arrow, which is why they sit in their own group here.
Curved and turning down arrows
Arrows that travel across and then turn downwards. ↵ is the familiar Enter-key shape, while ↲ and ↳ end in a small tip pointing left or right.
Up-down pairs (related)
These point both ways, so they are not pure down arrows. They are included because people often look for them on the same page — ↕ is the common choice for height, resizing and scrollable areas.
How to copy and paste a down arrow
Step 1: Find the arrow down style you want in the grid above.
Step 2: Click or tap it once. The button turns green and a “Copied” message confirms the symbol is on your clipboard.
Step 3: Paste it where you need it — Ctrl+V on Windows, Cmd+V on a Mac, or long-press and Paste on a phone.
That is the whole down arrow copy paste process — arrow down copy paste works exactly the same way: no sign-up, no font to install, and the pasted character stays editable text, so you can resize it, colour it or delete it like any letter.
Down arrow vs down-left and down-right arrows
A straight down arrow (↓) points at whatever is directly below: the next section, a download button, a lower price. Diagonal arrows point down and sideways. ↙ (down-left) suits a fall towards the lower left — a chart dropping to the left, or the bottom-left corner of a diagram. ↘ (down-right) is its mirror image and is the diagonal most often used for a downward trend that moves forward through a document. Picking the wrong one flips the meaning, so this page keeps straight, down-left and down-right arrows in separate labelled groups instead of mixing every pointing arrow down into one grid.

This table is the reference version of the grid: every down arrow glyph with its official Unicode name, code point, HTML decimal code and CSS code. If a site or app will not accept a pasted symbol, type the code instead.

How to type a down arrow on a keyboard
Windows — Alt code
Turn on Num Lock, hold Alt and type 25 on the numeric keypad, then release Alt. The ↓ symbol appears at your cursor. This works in most Windows programs; laptops without a keypad can use the on-screen keyboard or simply copy from this page.
Microsoft Word — Alt+X
Type 2193, then press Alt+X. Word converts the code into ↓. The same method works for every code in the table above — for example 21D3 Alt+X gives ⇓. You can also use Insert → Symbol and pick from the Arrows range.
Mac
Press Control+Command+Space to open the Character Viewer, search for “down arrow”, and double-click ↓ to insert it. If you use the Unicode Hex Input keyboard, hold Option and type 2193 instead.
HTML and CSS
In HTML, write the down arrow as the named entity ↓, or as ↓ (decimal) or ↓ (hex). In CSS content, use \2193. All four produce ↓.
Phone and tablet
iPhone and Android keyboards do not carry a down arrow mark on a standard key, so copy and paste is the reliable route: tap a symbol above, then long-press in your message or bio and choose Paste. The pasted arrow is plain text and sends normally.
What a down arrow is used for
Pointing at what is below — “details below ↓” in posts, comments and instructions, where the symbol for down arrow saves a whole sentence. In a caption, a point down arrow replaces a line of directions.
Scroll and expand cues — a down arrow at the bottom of a screen tells visitors there is more content, and ▼ marks menus and sections that open downwards.
Downloads — an arrow pointing down into a tray or line (↧, ⬇) is the near-universal download sign in apps and dashboards.
Decreases — prices, temperatures, rankings and statistics use a downward arrow to show something has fallen, often next to a red number in finance and weather reports.
Sorting and order — in tables and spreadsheets a down arrow usually means descending order, largest or newest first.
Directions and diagrams — south on simple maps, the next step down in a flowchart, or “move down” in game and keyboard instructions.
Down arrow meanings
The meaning of a down arrow comes from direction: down means towards the ground, the next level below, or a lower value. That is why the same small character can mean look below in a social post, less than before in a price list, and this way down on a sign. Style changes the tone rather than the meaning: ↓ is neutral text, ⬇ feels like an emoji and often carries a casual or negative tone in chats (“down”, “below”, a thumbs-down mood), and ▼ is functional — it belongs to menus and controls rather than sentences. Arrows pointing downwards in pairs or groups (⇓, ↡) simply add emphasis, like saying “further down” or “all the way down”.
Frequently asked questions
What is the down arrow symbol?
The down arrow symbol is ↓ (Unicode U+2193, officially named Downwards Arrow). It is a text character — not an image — that points straight down. People use it to show downward direction or movement, point to something below, mark a decrease, or indicate a download or a menu that opens downwards.
How do I copy and paste a down arrow?
Click or tap any symbol in the copy grid on this page and it is copied to your clipboard. Then paste it where you need it with Ctrl+V on Windows or Cmd+V on a Mac. On a phone, long-press where you are typing and choose Paste. No app, font or account is needed.
What is the Alt code for a down arrow?
On Windows, hold Alt and type 25 on the numeric keypad to insert ↓. In Microsoft Word you can also type 2193 and then press Alt+X, which converts the code into ↓. Both methods need a document or text field that accepts text input.
What is the difference between ↓ and ⬇?
↓ (U+2193) is the plain text down arrow: it follows your font and text colour, so it blends into normal writing. ⬇ (U+2B07, Downwards Black Arrow) is the heavier version and on many phones it renders as a blue emoji tile instead of text. Use ↓ inside sentences and documents, and ⬇ when you want the arrow to stand out like an emoji.
What is the difference between ↓ and ▼?
↓ is an arrow — it has a shaft and an arrowhead. ▼ (U+25BC, Black Down-Pointing Triangle) is a solid triangle with no shaft. In practice ▼ is used as a dropdown and expand indicator in menus, while ↓ is used for direction, movement and pointing at content below.
How do I type a down arrow in Word or Google Docs?
In Word, type 2193 and press Alt+X, or go to Insert, then Symbol, and choose ↓ from the Arrows range. In Google Docs, go to Insert, then Special characters, search for “down arrow” and click the symbol to insert it. Copying from this page and pasting works in both programs too.
