Unicode Symbols vs Emoji: What Is the Difference?

Every emoji is a Unicode character, but not every Unicode character is an emoji. The difference decides how a character looks, how it behaves when you copy it, and whether you can restyle it.

Text symbols — like ★, ♞ or ⚖ — are drawn by the same fonts that draw your letters. They take the colour of the text around them, grow and shrink with the font size, and change their design when you change the font. They behave like letters in every way: documents, spreadsheets and design software all treat them as text.

Emoji are Unicode characters too, but each platform paints them with its own full-colour artwork instead of a font glyph. That is why the same emoji smiles differently on an iPhone, a Samsung and a Windows PC: the character code that travelled is identical, only the local artwork differs. You cannot recolour an emoji, and apps — not fonts — decide how it looks.

Some characters live in both worlds. The heart ❤ is a text symbol by default; add the emoji variation selector (U+FE0F) after it and devices show the colour emoji ❤️ instead. Its twin selector (U+FE0E) asks for the plain text form. This is also why a copied symbol occasionally changes its look after pasting: the receiving app may add the colour presentation on its own.

Practically: choose text symbols when the character must match your text — documents, tables, usernames, designs in one colour. Choose emoji when you want the picture itself, with its colour and personality, and you accept that every platform will draw it its own way.
