How to type a rupee symbol

Looking for the rupee symbol on keyboard — and not finding it? You are not imagining it: most keyboards in the world simply do not have a ₹ key. The sign was only created in 2010, so it lives on Indian-layout keyboards and inside software menus everywhere else. This guide gives every working method per device, ranked fastest first. In a hurry? Copy the sign here — one click:

The 1-minute answer

Where you are typingFastest method
Windows, Indian keyboard layoutCtrl + Alt + 4 (the ₹ is printed on the 4 key)
Windows, any other layoutCopy from this page, or Character Map (details below)
Microsoft WordType 20B9 then press Alt + X
MacCharacter Viewer — no built-in key combo exists
iPhone / Android₹ key on Indian-region keyboards; otherwise long-press $ or copy here
Excel20B9 + Alt + X in a cell, or paste; format with an INR number format

Windows — every method

1. The ₹ key (Indian layouts). If your keyboard layout is English (India) or a Hindi layout, ₹ is printed on the 4 key. Press Ctrl + Alt + 4 (equivalently AltGr + 4 on keyboards that have an AltGr key). Switch layouts with Windows key + Space if you use several.
2. Alt code. In Word and many Windows editors: hold Alt and type 8377 on the numeric keypad. It needs a real numpad (or the Fn-locked embedded one) and does not work in every app — if nothing appears, use method 3 or 4.
3. Word’s code conversion. Type 20B9 and immediately press Alt + X — the code turns into ₹. Works in Word and Outlook.
4. Character Map. Open Character Map (Start menu, type “charmap”), search “rupee”, double-click ₹, Copy, then paste. Slow but universal.
5. Copy from this page. The cards at the top work in every app, browser and chat — honestly the fastest method on a non-Indian layout.

Mac — the honest answer

macOS has no default keyboard shortcut for ₹ — no Option combination produces it on standard layouts. Your two real options: Character Viewer (Control + Command + Space, search “rupee”, double-click to insert; add it to Favourites if you type it daily), or a text replacement — System Settings → Keyboard → Text Replacements: set “rs..” (or any trigger you like) to be replaced by ₹, and the Mac will type the sign for you in most apps from then on.

iPhone and Android

With an Indian keyboard (add one under keyboard settings — English (India), Hindi, or another Indian language), ₹ sits on the numbers/symbols row as a first-class key.
Without one: long-press the $ key — many keyboards pop up a strip of currency signs that includes ₹. If yours does not, copy ₹ from the strip at the top of this page and paste it; for repeated use, save it as a text-replacement shortcut (iPhone: Settings → General → Keyboard → Text Replacement; Android Gboard: Settings → Dictionary → Personal dictionary).

Why your keyboard might not have ₹ at all

The sign is young: India adopted ₹ on 15 July 2010 (designer Udaya Kumar’s र + R with twin top lines), and Unicode added it as U+20B9 that August. Keyboards manufactured for other regions — and layouts designed before 2010 — never gained the key, which is why “Rs” and “INR” are still common fallbacks. The full story, the sign family (₨, ৳ and friends) and price-formatting rules live on the rupee symbol copy page.

Formatting tip: the sign goes directly before the amount with no space — ₹500 — and Indian digit grouping puts the first comma after three digits, then every two: ₹1,00,000 (one lakh), ₹1,00,00,000 (one crore).

Frequently asked questions

Where is the rupee symbol on a keyboard?

Only on Indian layouts: on the 4 key, typed with Ctrl + Alt + 4 (or AltGr + 4). Other layouts never printed it — use the Word code 20B9 + Alt + X, the Alt code 8377, the Character Map/Viewer, or copy ₹ from this page.

What is the Alt code for ₹?

Alt + 8377 on the numeric keypad, in apps that support decimal Alt codes (Word reliably; results vary elsewhere). The layout-independent Word method is typing 20B9 and pressing Alt + X.

How do I type ₹ on a Mac?

There is no built-in key combination. Use the Character Viewer (Control + Command + Space, search “rupee”), or create a text replacement so a trigger like “rs..” expands to ₹ automatically.

How do I type ₹ on my phone?

Add an Indian keyboard (English (India) or Hindi) and ₹ appears on the symbols row. Otherwise long-press $ — many keyboards offer ₹ in the currency pop-up — or copy it from this page and save a text shortcut.

Should I type ₹, Rs or INR?

₹ for prices aimed at Indian readers (₹500). INR is the ISO code used in banking, invoices and currency conversion (INR 500). Rs is the older plain-text fallback — fine in informal writing, dated in professional documents.
