Line symbols

Click any line symbol below to copy it, then paste it into your bio, caption, document or chat. This page works as a simple online symbol keyboard: every card is a key, and one tap puts the line on your clipboard. Below you will find horizontal lines, vertical lines, dashed and double styles, ready-made divider strings for bios, and the combining character that produces a real underline in plain text. Lines are the quiet workhorses of formatting: they separate sections, frame names, and make plain text look designed.

Most copied: the box-drawing horizontal line ─ (U+2500). Unlike a hyphen it joins seamlessly with its neighbours, so ────── forms one unbroken rule.

Horizontal line symbols

Thin, heavy, double, dashed and wavy — the horizontal family. Repeat any of them to stretch a rule as long as you need, or copy a ready-made divider further down the page.

Vertical line symbols

Verticals separate columns, frame quotes and stand in for boundaries inside a line of text. The family runs from the everyday pipe | to the double vertical ║ and the dotted ┊.

Ready-made line dividers for bios and captions

Why build a divider character by character? These strings are pre-assembled — copy one and drop it between the sections of an Instagram or TikTok bio, a Wattpad chapter, or a Discord profile. Trim the ends to resize.

Underline and overline — lines that attach to text

An underline in plain text is not a formatting button; it is a character. The combining low line (U+0332) slides underneath the letter before it, so stacking it after every letter underlines a whole word anywhere — bios, usernames, chat — with no rich text needed. Copy the demo, then retype your own word letter by letter keeping the underline after each character (most “underline text” generators do exactly this). Its mirror image, the overline ‾ (U+203E), sits on top instead.

Not what you meant? If you are after the underscore character _ itself — the one in email addresses and file names — its dedicated home is the underscore symbol page. And when you need corners and junctions to build a full frame around your text, the border symbols collection takes over from these single lines.

A note on “line font” searches

Many people arrive here hunting a line font — a typeface drawn in single-weight strokes. A fair distinction: everything on this page is a character, not a font, so these lines keep their shape in any app. If you want your actual words restyled in outlined, double-struck or script letterforms, that is font territory — run your text through our font generator and combine the result with a divider from above.

How to type line symbols

Fastest: copy from this page — this online symbol page is the keyboard these characters never got.
Word and Google Docs: type three hyphens — on their own line and press Enter for an instant paragraph rule (=== and ___ give double and heavy variants in Word). For a single box-drawing character, use Insert → Symbol.
Windows: the Win + . emoji panel’s symbols section carries │ and ─; Character Map (search “box drawings”) has the whole family.
Mac: Character Viewer (Control + Command + Space) — search “line”.
Phone: the pipe | hides on the symbols keyboard; box-drawing lines are copy-paste only — which is what the grids above are for.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a line symbol and a dash?

Length and purpose. Dashes (– —) live inside sentences and are word-width. Line symbols like ─ are drawing characters: they join edge-to-edge with copies of themselves to form rules, borders and dividers of any length.

How do I make a long line in a bio or caption?

Copy a line symbol and paste it repeatedly — or skip the work and copy a ready-made divider from this page (────────── and friends). The characters are designed to tile without gaps.

How do I underline text on Instagram or in a username?

Use the combining low line (U+0332) after each letter, as in the demo card above. It is a character, not formatting, so it survives in plain-text fields where bold and underline buttons do not exist.

Is the pipe | the same as the vertical line │?

They look alike but are different characters. The pipe | (U+007C) is the keyboard character used in code and commands; │ (U+2502) is a box-drawing line that tiles seamlessly with ─ and the border family. On screen the pipe is usually slightly shorter.

Do line symbols work on every platform?

The box-drawing family is among the oldest and widest-supported parts of Unicode — it renders on Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. Exotic members (like the wavy dash on very old devices) are the only occasional exceptions.
